Title: From VP to New Territory: Should I FIRE or Seek a New Opportunity?
A seasoned executive reflects on career pivots after a layoff
I’ve spent 25-plus years in technology and recently held a vice-presidential role at a large tech company. Today I’m navigating a significant life decision with a net worth around $12 million—roughly half in liquid assets and half in real estate. I have two high school-age kids approaching college, and my annual spending sits near $300,000, placing me at the edge of the traditional FIRE 4% rule.
My original plan was to extend my work life by 3–5 years to boost liquid assets to about $10 million. Lately, though, the corporate environment has become emotionally draining: leadership changes, reorganizations, and intense growth pressures—especially around AI. The idea of re-entering a demanding role with genuine enthusiasm feels uncertain.
I’m curious how others have navigated similar crossroads. The options I’m weighing include:
– Returning to a corporate role
– Exploring executive paths at a startup (CxO level)
– Considering private equity partnerships
– Pursuing full-time real estate investments
– Taking a gap year to reassess
Given my background and current circumstances, what guidance or experiences would you share? This is my first post on a new account, as I prefer to stay private while exploring these choices.
